Bitcoin has been pulling away from the stock market for months — that, at least, is how one of the analysts we track sees it. The venues that trade bitcoin spent this window attaching themselves to it as fast as they could list.
Mayne put the first half plainly: bitcoin "spent a good while masquerading as a tech stock but has pretty much decoupled since 10/10 completely," with "some of the biggest companies in the world putting in 10,20,30% swings in either direction and we've barely moved" [1]. The second half arrived from the exchanges themselves, in their own announcements, on the same day.
What the venues listed
Coinbase Derivatives said it will open BRENTOIL-PERP and WTIOIL-PERP markets on or after 09:00 UTC on 3 August — perpetual futures on Brent and WTI crude [2]. Hours later the same account announced US500 Equity Index perp-style futures for 17 August, described in its own words as "perp-style exposure to the entire US large-cap economy, available for US traders" [3]. Two product announcements in one window; neither of them a cryptocurrency.
Binance said its tokenized-stock product bStocks crossed $500 million in assets under management within seven weeks of launch [4]. And Robinhood's quarter made the substitution measurable rather than anecdotal: record Q2 revenue of $1.31 billion, up 32% year-over-year — with crypto revenue down 38% to $100 million while event contracts rose more than tenfold to $156 million, which the company described as its fastest-growing revenue line [5]. At Robinhood, the event-contract line is now bigger than the crypto line.
Traffic ran the other way too, though on different rails. Aviva Investors, described as a $351 billion manager, launched a Central Bank of Ireland-approved tokenized share class of its US Dollar Liquidity Fund on the XRP Ledger [6] — a money-market fund using a crypto ledger as plumbing, rather than a crypto asset reaching a brokerage.
What the crypto-native layer did in the same hours
Aave will deprecate 96 asset reserves and wind down six deployments, affecting $98.1 million in supplied assets; founder Stani Kulechov said the review covers 50 low-adoption reserves, 25 reserves across Sonic, Scroll, zkSync, Metis, Soneium and Aptos, and 21 matured Pendle PTs under a new risk framework [7]. Luno cut its global staff by a fifth, citing automation [8]. And the tape itself stayed thin: reporting on Glassnode's read, The Block described a market that "has gone quiet on every surface, with spot volume at its lowest since 2019 and cash out-yielding the carry trade," as bitcoin pressed toward $65,000 with softer US data easing September rate-hike fears, a day after the Fed held with three hawkish dissents [9]. Bitcoin's own account posted $64,710.93 just after midnight UTC [10].
That is the shape worth holding onto. A venue does not list oil and the S&P 500 because its crypto business is thriving; it does so because it has customers, rails and a licence, and the cargo is negotiable. When the asset stops paying — and cash out-yielding the carry trade is precisely that — the rails get pointed at something that does.
The macro backdrop gave them no reason to hurry back. The Bank of England held its key rate at 3.75% [11]; US Q2 growth printed at a 1.5% annualized rate against a 2.1% forecast [12]; and US publicly held debt surpassed 100% of GDP for the first time since World War II [13]. Spot ETF flows on 29 July split the same way the products did: bitcoin +$32.11 million, Solana +$19.06 million, XRP +$584.71 thousand, ether -$18.65 million [14].
The other side, attributed
The dissent was specific and crypto-native, and it came from the analyst channel rather than from the venues.
Ansem reversed a bearish ether stance in public, opening a post "I AM BACK AND BULLISH ETH" and giving his reason as "devs are shipping actually novel things onchain. that's how bullish i am on crypto now," adding "the market moves quickly, have strong convictions, loosely held" [15]. Earlier in the window he wrote that "theyre pumping $UNI & ppl are buying coins & NFTs on ethereum mainnet it feels like 2020" [16], and his own words on a quoted post about on-chain money ran to three: "WE ARE BACK" [17].
He also supplied the sharpest counter to the substitution read, and it involves the same brokerage. Relaying remarks from Robinhood Crypto head Johann Kerbrat on why the firm covered users' gas costs during a memecoin-heavy week, Ansem quoted the reason as "it brings liquidity, users, attention," adding that "the chains that win support EVERYTHING people want to do onchain" [18]. The venue that reported a 38% drop in crypto revenue [5] is also the one that paid for on-chain activity out of pocket [18] — which is an argument that the diversification is additive, not a retreat.
Two more crypto-native items landed in the same window: Coinbase brought a crypto token, GRVT, to spot trading [19], and 1inch's co-founder presented the launch of Aqua, a shared-liquidity design for DeFi [20]. Circle minted 500,000,000 USDC on Solana [21]. The crypto-native rails did not go dark.
And where the analysts we track spent their attention is its own quiet data point. Two of them worked non-crypto books in this window: one posted on USD/JPY, asking whether the move was "BOJ intervention or a canary in the coal mine" [22], and another spent the window managing a US-listed tech equity position through a 30% single-day move [23]. Michael Saylor, meanwhile, reported Strategy's Q2 in four lines — bitcoin holdings up 11%, convertible debt down 18%, USD reserve up 12%, BPS up 5% [24].
What would falsify this
If Coinbase's oil and index contracts, Binance's tokenized stocks and Robinhood's event contracts turn out to sit alongside recovering crypto revenue next quarter rather than in place of it, then this window was product expansion rather than substitution — venues adding surface area while the core business holds. The read only survives if the crypto lines keep shrinking while the non-crypto lines grow.
The second test is cheaper and comes sooner: watch whether the new listings draw actual volume. An announced contract is a press release. A traded one is a business.
